3 Ways to Tell If Your Heater Is Broken

Signs Your Heater Needs Service

Imagine this: it’s nighttime and there’s a slight chill in your home. In an effort to make it more comfortable, you decide to put the heat on. Within twenty minutes, you realize that the temperature is exactly the same — and it’s still cold. Before you crank the heat up even more, here are some signs that your heater needs to be repaired or replaced:

1. The Heater is Blowing Cold Air

No matter how many times you adjust your thermostat or the temperature, your heat is never present — and only cold air exists. This is one of the most common signs of a broken heater. When you’re heating your home, it should never take more than twenty-minutes (the most) for your HVAC unit to work and ultimately produce heat. Sometimes the cause of this is due to having a pre-set temperature on your unit and not changing it. However, sometimes your HVAC unit could be broken initially (even if you do eventually change the thermostat).

2. Your Heating Bill Has Spiked

If your heating unit isn’t functioning properly, just like a clogged pipe, it will take more energy for your unit to work. In that case, your energy bill will be significantly higher than before. When your heater is broken, it will take a surplus of unnecessary energy to try and produce the heat you’re longing for. If this broken unit goes undetected for quite some time, then it will have the chance of continuing to increase your energy bill until the matter is taken care of.

3. Some Rooms Lack Heat

When you have an HVAC unit installed in your home, if you don’t have more than one thermostat, then heat should be present in every room where a radiator exists. If you’re turning on your heat and notice that half of your home is at the desired temperature — then your heater is broken. Although your unit may be broken, there is the possibility that some of the rooms in your home are poorly insulated — or not insulated at all. If that’s the case, then home insulation will fix the problem — but if that still doesn’t do the trick, then your heater is broken.
