3 Questions You Must Ask Before Assuming Your A/C is Broken

September 1, 2017

An undesired milestone for many homeowners is when their A/C unit breaks. However, when many individuals believe that their A/C unit is broken — it’s actually not. If you’re convinced that your unit is providing its last gust of cold air, then here are some questions you should ask before declaring it broken:

Question 1: Why Won’t it Turn On?

For many, this is the first sign of assuming their A/C unit is broken beyond repair. In reality, it may not be operating because the thermostat is set incorrectly. Usually when homeowners set their thermostat, they set it to a room temperature that changes over time. If the room’s temperature has remained the same for quite some time, then the A/C unit won’t turn on unless the room temperature changes.

Question 2: Why Is My Electric Bill Higher?

When an A/C unit runs for a long period of time on a daily basis, your electricity bill will skyrocket. However, this may not be the sole cause of a higher bill — in reality, a dirty filter is the culprit. If an air filter is clogged and has visible buildup, your A/C unit will have to work twice as hard to produce and emit cold air. When the filter is cleaned/replaced, you’ll instantly notice a difference with your unit — and a lower electricity bill by next month.

Question 3: Why Does My A/C Unit Keep Shutting Off?

Ever feel as if your A/C unit keeps shutting off before the room gets cooler? This is another result of having to adjust your thermostat and clean the filter. The easiest solution to this problem is to change the room temperature on your unit and to clean/replace the filter. Once you complete these steps, your A/C unit will run as good as new!
