How to Keep your Kitchen Clog-free on Thanksgiving

A clogged kitchen sink is an inconvenience at any time, but during the holidays it can be a nightmare. With food being prepared and family arriving, no one wants to plunge a sink, much less call a plumber. Here are a few tips to keep the excitement and your sink going.

No Grease

Absolutely no grease, oils or fats should go down your drain. These can build up along your drainage pipes and cause a clog. Instead, use paper towels to wipe any grease in your pans; then throw the paper towels in the garbage.

For more substantial amounts, collect grease in a jar or can and dispose of it in the trash can. In fact, some communities offer jugs to collect household grease for recycling — which is definitely the best way to dispose of any cooking grease. This, of course, will help prevent a grease clog from ruining your festivities.

Turn it On First

Before putting anything down the garbage disposal, be sure that both the water and the disposal are running first. This clears the way and ensures everything is ground and passes through. Continue running the water for a few seconds afterward to rinse the blades.

Not the Peels

Despite its name, a garbage disposal isn't really for garbage. During the preparations of your feast, don't put celery, apple or potato peelings down the drain. They can become stringy and cause a clog. You should always use a strainer on both sides of your sink to keep large particles out.
