Holiday Decorating Safety Tips All Homeowners Should Know

Do you hear what we hear? Yes, that’s the sound of the holiday season in full swing! And, of course, one of the best ways to celebrate is to deck the halls around your home! But before you string up the lights, secure garland, and place a wreath on your front door, here are a few decorating tips to take into consideration!

Decorating Safety Tips

Inspect Lights

Whether they’re incandescent or LED, it’s essential to examine your light strands before decking the halls. The reason being is that some of them may have deteriorated when tucked away for the remainder of the year. From broken bulbs to stripped wires, there are many ways that they can be damaged — which can be rather dangerous if they’re plugged in.

Use Supervision

No matter how many years you’ve been putting lights on the gutter or roof, it’s always wise to have a second set of eyes nearby. You can find yourself in a hazardous situation if a ladder gives way or isn't set up correctly. Of course, if you don’t feel confident climbing up to new heights, then it would be wise to only apply lights to objects that are within reach (i.e., bushes, walkways, small trees).

Stay Away from Vents

What happens if the perfect spot for your tree is right near a heating vent? If that’s the case, then you’ll want to keep it far from it. The reason being is that if a tree is exposed to a heating element for extended periods, there’s a chance that it can catch on fire — especially if your spruce is dehydrated.
