How to Beat the Heat on Independence Day

Are you attending an Independence Day celebration this year? If so, chances are it might be held outside in either your backyard or your friend’s backyard — which is more than likely in direct sunlight. While it’s nice to bask in the summer heat, it’s also essential to find ways to prevent heat exhaustion, dehydration, and other possible ailments. If you’re not sure where to start, here are some helpful tips to keep in mind on the big day:

Drink Plenty of Water

One of the most important things you can do is stay hydrated throughout the day. More times than most are willing to admit, people will load up on sugary drinks, rather than reaching for water. When this happens, you won’t be adequately hydrating yourself — which can lead to dehydration.

To help keep cool, make sure to drink water more often than you typically would. This will not only help regulate your body temperature, but it will also keep you feeling great all day long!

Wear Light, Comfortable Clothing

Typically when you attend an event or celebratory function, it seems that a go-to outfit would be something upscale — but when it’s a casual barbeque, you might want to rethink that. Especially if the event is held outdoors, you’ll want to don garb that’s light and comfortable. This will not only help you stay cool, but it will make your day much more enjoyable — especially if there are field day-esc games involved!

Go in the Pool

If you’re attending a party and the host encourages you to bring a bathing suit, do it! As it’s known, going for a swim will not only be a great form of exercise, but the water will also do an incredible job of keeping you cool — even after you get out.

If a pool isn’t present, then don’t be afraid to get a paper towel, dampen it in some cold water from the sink, and place it on the back of your neck. This is another “cool” way to help you beat the heat on the big day, minus the aquatic feature!
