Why Should I Have my Home's Ductwork Replaced?

Fact: it’s very important to keep your ductwork in working order. Faulty ductwork can cause higher energy costs, as well as letting airborne allergens blow into your home when you turn on your air conditioner or heater. Certainly, you will want the air in your home to be as clean as possible — so keeping up with your ductwork is very important.

If you choose not to replace your ductwork in a timely manner, it can lead to a much bigger, expensive problem down the road. Still not sure when and why you should have your ductwork replaced? Here are few things to consider:

Reasons Why you Should Have your Ductwork Replaced

Before putting off another ductwork replacement, keep these pointers mind:

  • Age: If your ductwork is more than 10 to 15 years old, you should replace it is as soon as possible. In some cases, if poor quality materials were used, or the ducts were not properly installed, then your ductwork may never make it past the ages listed above.

  • Checking exposed areas: If there are areas in your home where you can inspect your ductwork (i.e., a crawlspace or attic), visit them and take a closer look to see if you spot any holes/tears in the ductwork. Even if you happen to see any traces of eroded tape, disconnected joints, or chewed insulation, jot these signs all down, as they’ll be contributing to the poor ductwork.

  • Airflow: When your system is running, go to each room in your home and feel for the air that is coming out of the vents. If you happen to find any temperature variations, or the airflow does not feel as strong from a particular vent, you may have an issue with eroding ductwork and you’ll want to take care of it immediately..

  • Moisture: Look inside your vents, or around your ductwork, to see if you spot any signs of moisture. If you do see any signs of moisture (even the smallest amount), this could be a hazard, since moisture in dark places could lead to the growth of mold and mildew — which could cause pretty serious health risks and hefty cleaning cost down the road.
