What is Freon and What Does it Do?

When it comes to air conditioners, whether they are central (in your home) or in your vehicle, there’s a term that comes to mind quite often: Freon. While some might know what this helpful gas might be, there are some that do not — and that’s completely okay! To become further acquainted with your air conditioner, here are some things you should know about Freon.

What is Freon?

Freon, also known as R-22, is a colorless gas that helps air conditioners produce cold air. Without this odorless gas, your cooling device wouldn’t be able to function correctly, blowing around heaps of hot, warm air — which is something that no homeowner would ever want to endure during the hottest summer days. While Freon might seem like it can only be used for one product (air conditioners), it can also be used for various freezers and other cooling products that need the coldest air possible.

Now that we’ve discussed what Freon is, what does it do (internally) when added to your central air conditioner?

What Does it Do?

Just like adding ice to a warm glass of soda, Freon has the same effect on the coils (evaporator and condenser) of your air conditioner. When first added to your unit, the Freon will be warm. Once the gas comes in contact with the condenser coil (located outdoors), it will start to cool down.

After that, the R-22 (Freon) will then take any hot air from the outdoors and convert it into that cold, comfortable air that you’re looking for in the summer. The process continues to happen throughout the day, turning any space into a comfortable igloo when the temperatures outside begin to rise.

If your air conditioner happens to be running low on R-22 or the condenser coil is dirty, then you may begin to experience warmer air in your home. If you think that either of these might be a possible cause, it’s essential to call a professional to not only inspect your Freon levels but to make sure that your condenser coil is cleaned.
