How to Prepare Your Pipes for Colder Temperatures

November 7, 2019

As a homeowner, there are a series of things to check off of your to-do list. However, there is one small task that could turn into a big problem if left unattended: Protecting your pipes from freezing. And while the weather may not feel as if it’s below zero at this time, it doesn’t hurt to learn some simple tips to prevent a problem before it happens.

Tips to Prevent Pipes From Freezing

Keep a Consistent Temperature

Believe it or not, one of the simplest ways to prevent a plumbing disaster from happening is to make sure your home is a consistent temperature at all times. Sometimes, homeowners don’t adjust their thermostat when the weather changes outside, which could result in a burst pipe.

To stay in the clear, your home shouldn’t go lower than 68°. This will help prevent the possibility of any pipe damage while keeping your living space as comfortable and cozy as can be. And if you’re looking to stay more on top of the temperature in your home, then a programmable thermostat will be the best solution; you’ll be able to adjust it, anywhere, from a smartphone!

Insulate Your Pipes

Think about it: When you step foot outside of your home in the winter, you typically put on a jacket, hat, and scarf — however, your pipes are bear and uncovered. And just like you would feel uncomfortable and cold without your winter essentials, your pipes feel the same way; only you won't realize it until it's too late.

Another way to prevent a plumbing disaster is to insulate your pipes before the colder temperatures kick in. To do this, visit your local home improvement store and purchase conventional foam insulation and industrial tape. Once acquired, locate your exposed copper or iron pipes, followed by cutting, applying, and taping the foam.
