What Can and Cannot Go Down the Toilet

Toilet Problems

You've known what should go down your toilet for years, but what happens when you can't find any toilet paper? A shortage of toilet paper is something that most people would never have predicted six months ago. If you're one of the many people across the country who have found themselves out of luck because everyone else has bought out all of the toilet paper in your town, you're not alone. While we sympathize that you need to use something to clean off your bottom, there are a lot of things that people are using in place of toilet paper that are causing a lot of plumbing problems.

Why You Need to Use Toilet Paper

The only things that should go down the toilet are toilet paper and human waste. Other items are not a substitute including so-called flushable wipes. Since they do not dissolve in water, they clog up the works and cause significant problems for the sewer system as a whole. Putting the wrong things down the toilet can put a lot of strain on your plumbing system. Toilet paper is specially made to break down in water so that it can more easily pass through your plumbing system.

If you are using flushable wipes or another alternative due to the toilet paper shortage, use the trash can instead!

What Should Never Go Down Your Toilet

When we say only natural waste and toilet paper should go down your toilet we mean it. Avoid flushing the following, so your toilet stays in working order.

  • “Flushable” Wipes

  • Q-tips

  • Cotton Balls

  • Floss

  • Paper Towels

  • Menstrual Products
