Can You Flush The Toilet When The Power is Out?

A sudden lack of running water is always an unpleasant surprise. Most public water systems must occasionally be shut down for pipe or pump repairs. Flooding, earthquakes, and severe storms can cause power outages that affect the water supply. Now and then, someone forgets to pay the water bill. In most homes, it’s bound to happen sooner or later: Someone forgets that the water is shut off and uses the toilet. Fortunately, yes, a toilet can be used during a power outage. Here are a couple easy remedies to keep in mind.

Use the Built-in Spare Flush

Before you panic, remember that you have one good flush left in the tank after the water is cut off. Simply flush as you normally would, and you’re good to go.

Refill the Tank

It never hurts to keep a couple of gallons of distilled water on hand for emergencies, but they’re best saved for drinking. The water you flush with doesn’t have to be sparkling clean.

Follow these steps:

1. In a gallon bucket, collect rainwater or water from a stream, pond or backyard pool.

2. Remove the lid covering the toilet tank.

3. Fill the tank with water all the way to the top of the overflow tube.

4. Flush the toilet as you normally would.

Wash the Waste Down the Toilet

If you prefer, you can pour the water directly into the bowl:

1. Lift the toilet lid and seat.

2. Pour all the water into the toilet in one motion. You’ll have to be somewhat forceful to create a strong flush but not so forceful that you splash waste out of the bowl.

3. If necessary, repeat the process until all the waste is swept down the pipes.

If you have plumbing work scheduled that will disrupt your water supply, fill the tub in advance for plenty of spare flushes.
