5 Ways to Conserve Water in the Spring

March 2, 2017

Did you know that Americans today use 127 percent more water than people living in the 1950’s? As global temperatures rise and weather patterns become more irregular, water conservation has become a hot topic. But the good news is, conserving water is a lot easier than you may think. With just a few tweaks to your daily routine, you can have a huge impact on the Earth. Here are just some of the many ways you can use less water this spring.

Indoors

Stop any leaky pipes: A little drop here and a little drop there might not seem like a big deal at first, but one leaking faucet can waste 3,000 gallons of water per year – not to mention put a big dent in your water bill.

Load your dishwasher all the way: Good news for whoever is in charge of doing the dishes – the dishwasher uses less water than washing each plate and cup by hand. Just make sure the machine is fully loaded!

Outdoors

Don’t over-water your landscape: Instead of watering your lawn on a set schedule, take a look at the weekly forecast and plan your watering around days it will rain. This way, you’ll get lush, green grass without wasting water.

Use a drip irrigation system: This is a form of irrigation that saves water and fertilizer by only dripping a small amount of water onto plants over a long period of time. Large farms do this with a series of interconnected tubes and pipes, but it’s still possible to do without equipment. Next time you go to water your plants, give them three small buckets of water, instead of one long shower under the hose.

Raise your lawn mower blades: Setting your blades one inch higher means longer grass, and longer grass means less water evaporation.
