Quick Way to Keep Your Toilet Clog-Free On Thanksgiving

November 17, 2017

BY MITCH WRIGHT PLUMBING, HEATING & AIR

Let's face it: your toilet always clogs at the worst time (i.e. Thanksgiving). When it happens, most of us would probably just opt for a plunger. But what do you do if you're at a home on Thanksgiving without a plunger? If you’re up a creek without a plunger, here’s a trick that should help you get water flowing freely again:

(*PSA: this hack will only work on a toilet that’s not overflowing. So if water is coming out of the toilet, it may be time to call the professionals.)

Step 1: Lubricate the bowl.

Squirt a generous amount of dish soap or conditioner into your toilet. You can also break up a bar of soap and put the pieces into the bowl.

Step 2: Add hot water.

Add a gallon of warm (but not boiling) water to the bowl.

Step 3: Wait and watch.

After a few minutes, the hot water should start to break up the toilet paper while the detergent will help it slide through the pipes.

Step 4: Grab a hanger.

If you don’t notice anything happening, you may have to repeat steps 1 and 2. If you still don’t see any movement, it may be time to get creative. Grab a wire hanger and unravel it. Then, gently push it down into the pipe and see if you can move the debris.

By following these simple steps, you can easily alleviate a clog -- and ultimately the embarrassment that comes with it. Afterall: it's important to make your Thanksgiving memorable for the right reasons!
