How Often Should I Be Cleaning my Shower?

August 7, 2019

During a typical week, what’s on your list of household chores? For some, that might be a reminder to do laundry or wipe down the kitchen counter — but what about cleaning your shower?

Sure, it might seem as if this is the one spot in your home that stays clean 24/7 since you use shampoo, soap, and water in it, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, how often should you be cleaning your shower?

How Often Should I Clean my Shower?

On average, you should be cleaning your shower (and bathtub, if applicable) at least once a week. The reason being is that the hygienic cleaning vessel usually has soap scum buildup along every surface. Another point to keep in mind is that a dirty shower can even be a breeding ground for mold, bacteria, and mildew if neglected for quite some time.

What’s the Best Way to Clean my Shower?

Just like you wouldn’t neglect cleaning the handle on your toilet, the same applies to your shower. To start, you’ll want to wipe down the walls of your shower with a plumbing-safe cleaner — if there are any built-in shelves, make sure to take any items off of them, and wipe the entire shelf down.

Next, if you have a shower door, wipe it down thoroughly. If you happen to have a shower curtain, throw it in the washing machine on a light cycle, or replace it altogether if it’s been around for quite some time.

Once this is complete, clean the base of your shower, followed by the nozzle and handles. After these steps are complete, you’ll have a clean shower from head to toe!
