Can a Flood Hurt My Plumbing?

January 3, 2019

One of the worst-case scenarios for any homeowner is having a flood. Whether a burst pipe or Mother Nature caused it, it’s never pleasant to find water indoors. Flooding can take a severe toll on your home’s plumbing — which will cause extensive damage. Not sure what to look for? Here are some things that you might face with your plumbing after a flooding incident:

Common Problems

Broken Pipes

When floodwater drifts inside of your home, there will be a series of debris floating around — which can knock into your pipes, causing an initial breakage. The flood water itself is also extremely heavy and can cause damage to your plumbing pipes, too.

Unfortunately, you will not be able to have your pipes checked until the floodwaters recede. In addition to pipe damage, there’s also a chance for foundation issues — which sometimes occur in flooding incidents — that can also cause broken or warped pipes. Ultimately, some broken pipes will not be visible to the naked eye. Therefore, you will need to have a plumber from our team visit your home and inspect every pipe.

Clogged Drains

With all the debris, silt, and dirt floating around, the drains in your home can quickly become clogged, as a result. Instead of trying to clear these yourself, it’s important to let a certified plumber, who is knowledgeable about flooding, handle unclogging your drains — since you can cause further damage if they are cleared incorrectly.

Schedule a Plumbing Inspection

One of the most important things that you can do after a flood? Schedule a plumbing inspection. Not only will your plumber be able to examine your pipes properly, but they’ll be able to assess the damage that has been done. However, if you avoid having a plumbing inspection, then negligence can lead to expensive repairs in the future.
