Home Projects To Tackle While Sheltering in Place

May 15, 2020

If you are getting restless as you shelter in place, now is an excellent time to tackle home improvement projects that never seem to get done. Here are two simple projects that will help freshen your home.

Clean Your Air Conditioner's Air Filters

Filters on heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems are the first line of defense in keeping the unit clean. When filters get dirty, pollutants bypass the filter, enter ducts, land on the system's internal components, and are blown into your living space. Hair, dust, and other particulates settle on coils, coat ducts, and cling to grilles. When this goes too far, you lose energy efficiency.

Some filters can be cleaned, but others you'll have to replace. To clean, turn off the unit, open the housing, and carefully remove the filter. Reusable filters can be vacuumed. If they are filthy, wash them with soap and water too. Make sure the screen is dry before reinstalling it. To speed drying, you can use a hairdryer set to "air" or "cool." Be sure air is cool to avoid damaging the filter.

If your unit needs replaceable filters, you'll need to switch them out every month. Make sure you prepare ahead of time so you can replace them.

Clean Vents

Your vents can fill with dirt and are often neglected when cleaning around the house. Floor vents can easily fill with dirt, pet hair, and misplaced toys. It’s easy to vacuum the area and increase the efficiency of your HVAC system. Maintaining your HVAC unit saves energy, lowers utility bills, reduces the frequency of repairs, and prolongs the system's life. Cleaning vents and changing your filters are an important aspect of that.
