Should I Invest in a Tankless Water Heater?

June 5, 2017

Does the idea of 50 gallons of hot water sitting in your water heater all day feel like a waste? If so, you may be one of the many people looking to switch over to a tankless water heater. Because a tankless water heater only heats water once the faucet is turned on, you don’t have to spend a lot of money keeping 40 of 50 gallons of water hot 24/7.

If you’re thinking of having a tankless water heater installed, here are a few other things you should consider:

  1. Capacity
Is your house home to three teenagers who love taking hour-long showers? Or is it just you and your spouse living together? Do you have four full-sized bathrooms or just one? These factors will all influence the size and efficiency of your water heater. If your hot water demands are higher than normal, you may need to install two tanks.
  2. Power Source
Tankless water heaters can run on electricity, natural gas, or propane. However, most industry experts will tell you that your best bet is to stick with either natural gas or propane, since electric heaters will require you to upgrade your electrical panel.
  3. Efficiency
One of the major reasons why people make the switch to a tankless water heater is to cut down on their energy use. For houses that use 40 or less gallons of hot water a day, energy.gov states that a tankless water heater can be 24 – 34% more energy efficient than a conventional storage tank.
  4. Expense
There’s no denying that a tankless water heater will cost more than a traditional heater. But while the upfront cost is a bit more, it’s far less expensive to run and maintain it.
  5. Life-span
Unlike traditional tanks, which last for around 10-15 years, a tankless water heater will usually last for over 20 years.
