Keeping Your Pets Safe from a Heater

Q: What is a pet’s favorite place to sleep in your home? A: In front of the heater! Sure, your dog or cat may feel a sense of comfort snoozing in front of a radiator — but it can also be a safety hazard if they get too close. If you’re concerned that your animal may be at risk, then here are some safety precautions to take:

Limit Heater Time

One of the best ways to make sure your pet is out of harm’s way is to limit their heater time. Sure, your pet may feel inclined to sleep there all day — but there is a chance they could dehydrate or get burnt if they happen to lean against it.

Put up a Fire Screen

Another solution to keeping your pet safe is to place a fire screen (for a fireplace) around their favorite radiator. Not only will this be the best way to keep them at a comfortable distance, but it will also leave you worry-free!

Close the Doors

Sometimes, your pet’s favorite radiator happens to be in another room — and if you’re not home, that could be a potential danger. If that’s the case, then it’s essential to close the door to that specific room when you’re away from the house. This will not only keep your pet safe, but it will also give you peace of mind.

Always Supervise

If you happen to see your pet sleeping in front of a portable heater or radiator, then it’s important to supervise them. Of course, you don’t have to sit and watch your pet sleep all day long — but it’s important to know where they are and monitor how they’re doing.

Certainly, if you happen to see your pet climb on top of the heating essential or getting too close, then it’s best to pick them up and move them out of harm’s way.

Move Toys Away

Another tip is to move their toys away from the heater. Sometimes, your animal will be tempted to push their favorite play essentials underneath a radiator or near a portable heater, which can be dangerous if they try to retrieve them while it’s on.

When you move their toys in a safe, cool place, then the chance of your pet putting it near the heater will be obsolete!
