How Can I Tell if my Water Heater Needs to Be Repaired?

Fact: your water heater is one of your home's unsung heroes. Every day, whether you're doing laundry or washing the dishes, your water heater ensures that you have the hot water you need to get the job done.

You may notice that things aren't working quite like they used to. Like many home systems, there are warning signs that indicate the need for a repair, but you may not connect the dots and realize there's a serious issue right away. Here are some signs to be on the lookout for with your water heater.

Your Showers Take Forever to Heat Up

If you turned on the shower and stood there shivering for a solid five minutes, your water heater may be clogged. Sediment tends to build up at the base of the tank over time, which can obstruct the flow of hot water.

There may also be an issue with the internal hardware like the burner or igniter. If these pieces wear out, then your water heater won't be able to efficiently heat water in a timely manner.

You Notice Cloudy Water Coming from the Faucets

Water that carries a sharp metallic scent or appears tinged with rust is a clear sign that your water heater is wearing out. If there is actual rust inside the tank, you'll notice discoloration in your water supply.

If the actual tank is no longer viable, then you'll have to purchase a new one. The average water heater lasts approximately 10 to 20 years, so if you live in an older home, you may be due for an upgrade.

Murky or tinted water can also be a sign of a rusting rod inside the heater, which can be easily replaced by a professional.

Are You Experiencing Water Heater Problems?

Whether your water won't get hot or it runs cold after a few minutes, we can help diagnose and troubleshoot the issue. In many cases, a tank flush or simple replacement can restore your water heater to full capacity.
